Some meals, snacks dropped by United
United Airlines, struggling to curb losses from fuel prices, will become the first U.S. carrier to stop serving free meals in the coach cabin of some overseas flights.
Instead, United will offer food that can be purchased aboard trips from its European "gateway" airport, Washington's Dulles International, starting Oct. 1, spokeswoman Robin Urbanski said.
The carrier also will eliminate a second snack service before arrival on transcontinental routes between San Francisco and New York, and replace it with a beverage-only service.
United is joining other U.S. carriers in charging for coach-cabin snacks and meals on longer flights in the United States or North America. That change will take place Sept. 2.
Wanted: A few good host families in California.
That's the word from the Center for Cultural Interchange, which is designated by the U.S. State Department to sponsor visas for high school exchange students from around the world.
Most of the 180 students who still need placements are boys from Asian countries, though there are a few from Europe, South America and the former Soviet Union. The students are ages 15-18, and most come for the full academic year. Details: (800)"‰634-4771, www.cci
