US Labor Day holiday travel to fall 0.9 pct–AAA - Reuters UK

NEW YORK, Aug 22 (Reuters) - American travel will dip during the Sept.
1 Labor Day holiday weekend by the largest amount in at least eight years
as travelers face high fuel costs and a slowing economy, according to a
survey released by travel and auto group AAA on Friday.
The number of Americans who will travel 50 miles or more during the
Labor Day weekend will drop 0.9 percent to nearly 34.38 million Americans,
according to an online survey conducted by the group.
The number traveling by car will decrease 1.1 percent, while air travel
will drop about 4.5 percent. However, travel by train, bus and other modes
of transport should increase by 12.5 percent, AAA said.
"More travelers, concerned about the economy, gasoline prices and
rising airfares, are opting to travel by train, bus, motorcycle and cruise
ship to their holiday weekend destinations," AAA President and CEO Robert
L. Darbelnet said in a press release.
