Las Vegas hits 9th inning jackpot to win 7 to 5 - Shelby Star

Three straight doubles in the top of the seventh by Las Vegas keyed a 3-run rally as Post 76 claimed a 7-5 victory over Omaha, Neb. Post 374 in the opening game of the American Legion World Series at Keeter Stadium at Veterans Field.
Jeff Malm, Johnny Field and Erik Van Meetren posted RBI, two-baggers in the seventh - giving Las Vegas a 6-1 lead against Omaha left-hander Nick Standish. Matt Hall had a single to ignite the outburst.
After Post 374 (41-17) closed to within 6-5 in the eighth, Las Vegas (71-7-1) added an insurance run in the ninth on Corey Lafler's double off Tyler Ware.
"We talk all the time about adding on and not being complacent," Las Vegas head coach Frank Ryan said. "I thought that run in the ninth was big to give us a two-run margin."
Donn Roach (5-0) went seven innings to pick up the win for Post 76. The righthander gave up three runs and seven hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.
In the eighth, Omaha scored two on Roach then added two more against reliever Paul Sewald. Tyler Niederklein, Jesse Valverde and Brandon Bass drove in runs in the inning. Niederklein would later score on a passed ball, while Vervelde came home on an error.
"We did a nice job in the eighth of staying in it, but we left too many guys on early," Omaha head coach Frank Ryan said. "We definitely gave them a few, and you can't do that against a quality ballclub."
Jeff Malm worked a scoreless ninth for Las Vegas. Standish (9-4) took the loss for Omaha.
Post 374 faces the winner of Kennewick, Wash. and Jonesboro, Ark. Saturday at 5 p.m. Post 76 will take on the loser of that game at 10 a.m.
