The American College of Emergency Physicians Foundation recommends a travelers’ first-aid kit for potential medical emergencies whether you’re flying to your destination, taking a cruise ship or simply going camping. The foundation, which supports higher-quality emergency medical care, says you should get a medical check-up before departing and include the results in the first-aid kit, listing any medical conditions, allergies and operations. Then customize the kit depending on the type of travel (bring sunscreen for the beach, insect repellent for camping).
Basic items to include are personal medications; aspirin or ibuprofen for pain, fever and headaches; antibiotic ointment for cuts and burns; antifungal cream; bandages of various sizes; thermometer in its case; tweezers; scissors with rounded edges; antiseptic wipes; hand sanitizer; and an extra pair of glasses if you wear corrective lenses. Travelers going on a cruise should inquire beforehand what medical equipment is aboard ship and if there’s an emergency physician on staff. Any chronic conditions should be reported to the cruise line at least a month before departure. Before going abroad, always check if immunizations or medical documentation are needed.
